Sam agreed that the crew could know her skills, and that she would tell the doctor her real age.
"Thank you," Sam said. She paused for a moment, and smiled a little. When she spoke again, her voice sounded younger, lighter, "And thanks for not just kicking me off the ship."
Ilana waved that off as though she found the notion ridiculous. "I can't fault you for being on your guard and not sharing upfront. If I'd known you were underage without the rest of your story, I likely wouldn't have taken you on, mostly because in normal situations that's kidnapping," Ilana said.
"But your situation ain't normal," Ilana added. She shook herself slightly, to stop herself from going a-rambling again. "Either way. I don't make a habit of kicking people out for things they have no control over, especially those helping me and my people."
She laughed a little and added, "Don't bite the hand that feeds you, right? You're the cook, so you quite literally feed me and the rest of these weirdos."

"Don't bite the hand that feeds you, right? You're the cook, so you quite literally feed me and the rest of these weirdos." Sam was more grateful than she knew how express at the moment. The comment about her being the one to feed the Captain and "these weirdos" got a laugh from the girl Her eyes wandered down to the table, and the schematics. "You know hacking for all this time, I have some idea of where people tend to put surveillance cameras, if that's of any help."

Sam laughed, hopefully letting out a bit of the tension that had been building up as she talked about things no one would want to talk about. Her eyes wandered down to the table, and the schematics. "You know hacking for all this time, I have some idea of where people tend to put surveillance cameras, if that's of any help."
"Actually, that would be very helpful," Ilana said. "I'd thought about asking if you wanted to look them over, being so tech saavy. I've gotten fairly good at spotting them myself, but that's boots on the ground. I can take a guess at where they're likely to be, but I'm wrong as often as not."
She paused a beat, then, "Once we get close enough for you to hack in, you can tell us whether we need to watch for pressure switches, traps, motion sensors, and the like, but having an idea where to start so we can form some semblance of a plan before we get there would definitely help."

Sam nodded and took a seat where she could get a better view of the schematics. It only took a few moments before she spoke up.
"Wooded area, few buildings. Campground?" Though the question was more thinking outloud than needing an answer.
"Well, they almost definitely have cameras on the buildings. One in the front, one in the back of each. Also, the buildings would have alarms rigged to the front door, and maybe some of the windows."
Sam studied the image again, "The three buildings," pointing out three structures that seemed taller than the rest. "Are likely guard towers. Unless they have a lot of disposable income, they likely didn't equip all the guard towers with cameras, just the unmanned ones."
Sam then pointed to some markings that were trees to the right of the entrance, "Cameras likely in these trees here," and then pointed at trees to the left. "And these trees here. Probably about ten feet in the air."
"They'll be a camera at the entrance, likely an alarm and possibly a trap of some sort. Also at least two or three cameras on the path leading into the place, maybe another alarm." She paused. "That's my estimate anyway. I can likely easily take care of the cameras and alarms. The traps might be a little trickier to find, but I should still be able to."

Sam nodded and moved to the couch by Ilana to better view the schematics. Ilana gave the datapad to the girl and she immediately set to work. She spoke aloud as she looked, much like Ilana herself tended to, so she didn't interrupt.
She pointed out some obvious places cameras and alarms would be, windows, doors, and the like, but then she started pointing out other things. Not so obvious things, like the guard towers, and the trees surrounding the place.
Sam pointed to the trees to the right of the entrance, "Cameras likely in these trees here," and then pointed at trees to the left. "And these trees here. Probably about ten feet in the air."
She's smart, alright. Smarter than most would guess, given her youth, Ilana thought, still not interrupting.
"I imagine some of the traps would be manual traps that we'd need to keep a lookout for, but there may be others linked into the security system. Those are usually very nasty, and it'd be nice to know ahead of time to watch out for that variety as well, so I appreciate any insight you can give us on that score once you're in their system," she added.
"Something else you may not have connected. I know you're smart, but sometimes… sometimes we don't let ourselves have hope," Ilana began.
"We currently have what is known as a "finder" on board the ship. That new guy, Mike. A friend or somesuch of Rina's," Ilana waved it away, dismissing the semantics of their relationship. "It's possible he could help you find out what happened to your brother. My understanding is that he's very good. If you think that over and the only thing that is going to stop you from asking is that you can't afford to pay him, ask anyway. I'll make sure he's paid for his work."
She thought a moment, not wanting the girl to get offended by Ilana offering to pay him, and added, "And I know your type. I was that type. It's not charity. It'll be payment for hacking on Osirus and saving our asses."

When the Captain mentioned some of the traps would likely be manual, Sam nodded. It was probably a given that would be the case.
The conversation turned and when Ilana mentioned hope, Sam wasn't sure excatly where this was going but then it became clear. Mike was a finder? Sam already figured out there was more to the man than bar tender but she hadn't expected to find that out.
The idea of finding her brother, from someone who was much better at it than herself, there was certainly a temptation there. Sam had done what she could to try to find him but had come up empty.
Of course, there were issues to hiring Mike, the first was the money. Sam knew she couldn't afford it. Ilana seemed to take care of the problem by offering to pay buy Sam wasn't about to take charity. However, as if the Captain was reading the girl's mind - "I know your type. I was that type." Those were the Captain's words. Then the offer to consider it payment.
The other issue was that would require disclosure of information to Mike, information she wasn't keen on sharing. Sam remained silent as the offer was presented, then didn't say anything for several seconds. "I appreciate the offer but I'll need to think about it."

"I appreciate the offer but I'll need to think about it," Sam said.
"Understandably so," Ilana said, knowing full well she'd need to think on such a thing as well before making that sort of agreement. "He'd need to know things, and you don't know him. Rina trusts him, and I trust Rina's judgement, but I fully understand that you have some reservations. I'd be surprised if you didn't."
Ilana took a sip from her glass and said,"In any case, if you decide to, just let me know and I'll arrange the payment. If you decide not to, I'll give you the fee anyway, because you're still owed for that work, and I pay my debts."

However, not trusting people had kept Sam alive for all these years, it wasn't an easy thing to relinquish. As for the pay, "I will let you know but, if you don't mind, hold on to the pay until I decide." The fact that Sam didn't just take the money meant she was seriously considering asking Mike. The person ask about the man was, likely, Rina. "I have some things I need to do," Sam said, "So, I'll leave you too this and if I don't see before the morning, goodnight." Sam was figuring an early night because she probably wasn't going to get a lot of sleep anyway

Ilana nodded her understanding. She has a lot to think about, for sure, she thought.
"Goodnight, Sam," she said, giving the girl the out she needed to hide out and think for a while. "As unlikely as it is, given the weight of what we've discussed, try to enjoy your night."
Ilana, knowing she'd just been given too much information to be able to concentrate further on the plans, turned the datapad off, gathered her blanket and glass, and stood to leave as well.
