Talents:: Burts is an incredible tracker. He has amazing and somewhat revolutionary techniques when it comes to catching new slaves. His years at working at it has allowed to refine the art into a science, in his mind at least. He doesn’t view people, as people, merely as animals. And he considers himself to be a sort of bird of prey, and that once captured, they are his to do with what he pleases. He’s extremely handy with a pair of Marakov pistols he keeps on his belt at all times, and doesn’t hesitate to use them should his cargo get a little bit, antsy.
Flaws:: Burts has no value for human life. And because of this, no one is considered close to him. He commands loyalty through fear, and is highly aggressive towards those that do not obey him to the letter. He’s got a knack for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time to people, and has a lack of concern for personal hygiene. He also has serious issues with pride. He is definitely one to hold a grudge, even if he goes through serious extremes to get even. He is extremely greedy, and many of his buyers refer to him as a “Trashy son of a whore.” He’s also a vicious racist, considering anyone who doesn’t look like himself to be inferior, and states as such openly and frequently.
History: Born on a Verbena to a somewhat poor farmer, Burts had a rough start. His mother had died in childbirth, and his father was an extremely brutal man. He made his child hood almost as hard as possible. But Burts had an incredible respect for his father, and clung to his every word. His father was a horrible racist, and this stuck with Burts forever. But Burts never liked the farming life, and instead his favorite pass time was hunting. He would hunt every living creature in the forests around their farm, and bring in all manner of creature, both big and small.
But his father died, by his own hand when Burts was only 16, and Burts wasn’t sure what to do. He knew he didn’t want to be farmer, so he sold the land and kept the money. He used it to get passage to a planet called Burnadette, where he thought he could make his way into life.
He miscalculated what the core-worlds were like though. He was a major cast out from the moment he arrived. There was a sort of “High Society” feel here, which he somehow knew he could never be a part of. He was very envious of them, but there would never be a chance for him to join them. But by chance, he found himself at an underground slave auction. He was amazed and highly intrigued by what he saw there. The concept had never occurred to him before, but he knew he wanted to be apart of it. He came upon one of the Slave Ship Captains, and begged to join. He was taken on as an apprentice to the trade. He would be taught to hunt, and capture human beings. And from the moment he started he was very good at it. He had no remorse for the people they caught, and loved the thrill of “The hunt” as he considered it.
When he was 26, he was very experienced at it. But the ship he was working on, the Shell-back The Hardtack, had a bit of change in leadership. The captain, and man who’d taken Burts under his wing, was retiring. He handed the ship off to a man named Wong, whom Burts had always hated. Burts remained under his command, but clashed with him frequently. Finally Burts had had enough, and orchestrated a mutiny against Wong. It wasn’t a difficult task, as Burts was one of the most liked crewmen on the ship. The mutineers stormed Wongs quarters in the night and killed him, and Burts placed himself in command. None of the other crewmen not involved disputed as they were worried they may wind up like Wong. And so Burts became the head of the Captain of The Hardtack.
He had a brutal efficiency with this work, and frequented Ezra for his cargo. He would take massive amounts of people from various towns and villages for involuntary servitude off world. He took over all of their contacts, and no one complained because he was so quick to bring about results. He also developed a bit of a gambling streak, and would frequently cause other people to become in his debt. Sometimes he lost, but not all the time. This pattern continued for years. Crewmen came and crewmen went, but Burts remained constant with the whole operation.
Then something changed in one of these years. A man named O’Terra, a low life dead beat, wasn’t able to pay up some of his gambling debt to Burts. Burts wanted something of value that could make up the cost, and O’Terra offered his son into servitude to cover the debt. Burts agreed, but the moment he did, O’Terra’s son tried to run off the moment the deal was made. He bit off one of Burts crewmens finger, and started making a mad dash towards nowhere. But Burts struck him hard with his boot on the boys back, bringing him to the ground. The boy had a fight in him, and Burts knew he could put it to use.
He loaded the boy, Marcus, onto his ship. The first few months were difficult, as he had to break him. Eventually he got the boy to a “reasonable” state of mind, and began teaching him some tricks of the trade. He had the boy learn how to use a rifle and ride a horse, which were essential for their line of work. As the boy grew older, he was increasingly more effective. Burts found him to be a very valuable asset. He used him for more and more as the years went by, and constantly engrained in him that he was his “God”, and he controlled his life and death. He beat Marcus constantly, and tried to ensure Marcus was loyal to him alone. After four years, he wanted to put Marcus to the real test. Marcus’s father had fallen back into debt with Burts, and he decided that he was tired of not seeing payment. He ordered Marcus to kill his father, and prove himself.
Burts stood, with two others of his crewmen, as he waited for Marcus to pull the trigger and kill his father. But to his surprise, Marcus turned the gun on to him and his crewmen. He was shot by Marcus, and as he fell, his eye hit a rock, which rendered it useless. With two of his crewmen dead, a whole in his stomach and his left eye destroyed, he watched for the second time as Marcus tried to run off into the distance, only this time he succeeded. Angry and enraged he crawled his way back to his ship where he received medical attention. He wanted to track down Marcus, and show him the consequences of his actions, but he was too weak from his injury. And the politics of the verse’ were getting very interesting.
When the Unification War began, the slave trade was a bit less lucrative then another line of work, smuggling. For the duration of the war, Burts was a gunrunner for the Independents, making quite a bit of money as he did. But near the wars end it got to be too dangerous, and he stopped. He had to lay low for a while, and as he did he began to lose all the hard earned money that he had received through the war. And finally when the war ended he had to re establish all of his business contacts. He eventually did, but not before he was growing a bit desperate for money.
He eventually got himself back on his feet, and has a steady enough flow of money to keep the ship in top form. The already upgraded Mk2 Shelback was quite a serious machine. Since the war ended, Burts even purchased a Deterrent-Class Fighter with extra lay over funds, and has used it several times as an intimidation tactic in some of his “Round Ups”.
Special Note: Burts’ left eye is a cybernetic implant. It is experimental and is only functional for short periods of time each day. Otherwise it is simply a ‘glass’ eye to replace a missing one. It has functions that act like a telescope, and a low level scanner. It can also be used to relay simple messages in old ‘Morse’ code. That function can only be used for a few seconds and drains much of the power inside of the eye. Mostly Burts uses it to signal ambushes, or call them off, during clandestine deals.
