He has traveled the verse' for years, giving a modern offshoot of the teachings Buddha, or "The Enlightened One" as he refers to it. Talents
- Martial Arts - Tian is a master of a form of Martial Arts he refers to as "Old Crow". It requires him to stay very limber, even though he is getting older. He uses it as a form of meditation, which some find odd, as they will often find him standing in awkward positions (Such as standing on one leg with the other in a crane position like a flamingo for 2 hours straight)
- Gunslinger – Tai Minh’s order has adjusted to life on the border and rim. The harsh environment has caused for people to be overtaken by wicked desires. For this reason their view on violence isn’t as harshly negative as others. So long as it is taken purely in defense, or in the defense of others they do not see it as so terribly wrong, and is not lethal. Tai Minh was given a pistol years ago, and in the time by himself has taught himself to use them quite well. He only utilizes non-lethal ammunition however. He also refuses to use a weapon that would fire more then once, as he believes in having complete control over his action. He would only fire in a defensive manner, but for Tai Minh such lines can be blurry. He does know how to twirl and handle the weapon, but doesn't do so in a threatening manner.
- Linguist - Aside from speaking English and Chinese, Tian speaks two languages very similar to Chinese which few are familiar with in the modern age (Korean and Vietnamese). He learned these in his younger years, and rarely does he use them, but it comes in handy if at times he is compelled to insult someone without their knowledge.
- Musician - Since he was 9 years old he has been playing the Pipa, the ancient Chinese instrument. He plays well and goes with his own slow sort of style that he believes flows with pieces of his spirit
Flaws:
- Disconnection - At times Tian can seem, distracted. It's not spontaneous, but it can be hard to get through to him sometimes.
- Misspeaking - At times, due to his accent and the phrasing of the different languages he speaks get in the way of the point he is trying to get across. Because of this he often tries to speak slowly, but this doesn't always work.
Personality traits: Tai Minh is the definition of easy going. He is a man who is not tormented by time, stress, the past, or anything that the average person is. He is simply lives each day. Perhaps he is traveling, helping someone, meditating, it doesn't matter. He sees signs from the world beyond in everything and attempts to follow them. He is perfectly satisfied with himself and accepts others as they are believing that they have their own purpose in the universe.
Tai Minh’s faith is also rather different. It is an offshoot of Buddhism, but does not carry things are direct teachings of Buddha. They will generally invoke the “Enlightened One”, but while they adhere to most tenants their views are frequently different. Tai Minh has often found himself an accessory or even an accomplice to criminal activity, but he views it as necessary to help guide those with him. He also sees nothing wrong with carrying the deadly firearms that he does. Mainstream Central Planet Buddhists may consider him to be a broken monk, but Tai Minh and many others, consider him to be the perfect guide for those that live in the harsh edges of the universe.
History:
Tai Minh was born on Hera, in a small village called 'Chim Yen' in an arid part of the planet. He was the second born son of his family, which left his ambitions somewhat open even at birth. His older brother had been born several years before him, and he was already being groomed to follow his father’s work, which was tradition, as the village alchemist. They created many potions of herbs and spices, which were only found out in the desert. For weeks at a time his brother and father would leave he and his mother alone as they went out to search for rare desert plants.
When he was only 7 years old one of the monks of a near by Monastery came into their village. Tai Minh curiously followed him around through the village as he picked up different things he searched for. The monk noticed Tai Minh following him, and noticed his curiosity. For whatever reason, the monk found the boys curious nature to be interesting. He went to speak with Tai Minh's parents, and claimed to see the making of a monk within him. His father recognized the honorable nature of such a calling, and saw no reason to have his youngest son go on into his profession as his eldest son was well on the way to filling in his fathers place when he had passed on. He gave his blessing, and the monk took Tai Minh off into the desert to study at the 'Zos Sishen Monastery '
From the moment he arrived, Tai Minh seemed very astute in learning the teachings of the "Enlightened One". He took quite well to everything, and his curious nature never left. He would read books, and learn from the others at the Monastery from sun up to sun down. He found new languages fascinating, and some of the masters in the Monastery spoke in unusual ones. It was a sort of tradition that they had kept to maintain many of the old ways of the humanity from centuries passed. Language was an important cultural trait as far as many at the monastery were concerned. Thus Tai Minh spent many months with them trying to learn them, and over the years he picked up three which were not spoken at all in his village (English, Vietnamese, and Korean). In between learning these languages he also learned to play the Pipa, which was an ancient instrument. He found its tones very relaxing, and a good way to relieve himself. In addition, Tai Minh spent a decent amount of time in the kitchen of the monastery, learning that someone could make something grand from things that were very simple. From when he had first joined the Monastery, he began learning 'Zarashu', a great meditative technique, but also a difficult form of martial arts. He was very good at it, but he wasn't the best at it. In spite of this, he still practiced it regularly. As the years went on, Tai Minh became a rather recognizable face at the monastery, and he knew just about everyone at there.
When Tai Minh reached 22 years of age he decided to leave the Monastery in search of his own enlightenment, which was not uncommon, and often encouraged by many of the older masters. The universe was a monolithic place, and one couldn’t hope to learn everything by simply staying in one place. The verse' was a big place, and he thought that enlightenment would come with a clearer if he traveled the galaxy. He boarded a supply transport, which arrived at the Monastery every few months to give them the necessary provisions and left Hera. He knew he'd return to the Monastery eventually, but for now he wanted to go and see the stars.
The transport landed on Persephone, and Tai Minh was introduced to a world he never thought existed. It was a fast paced environment and one he could hardly keep up with. He tried to mingle and blend, but had difficultly doing so. Everyone was so aggressive and self-centered. This was something that he had trouble mixing with. He was in a bar one day and found himself watching a band, and was fascinated by the instruments they played. It was a type of music he’d never heard before, and he was fascinated by it. He wondered if he could play it on his Pipa, but that was difficult. What he took from it was that he could continue his own musical affinity and find a deeper path to his own spirit. He got work as a deck hand on a large transport ship. The ships mechanic played the fiddle, but also knew how to play the style of music Tai Minh did. The mechanic and he would play on a frequent basis, and the crew liked to hear it. The mechanic also taught Tai Minh how to better blend in and mingle with the verse' at large. Specifically he taught him about not drawing attention to himself, and to emphasize a strength of his, that was self sufficiency. Over time, Tai Minh went from confused and out of place, to fitting right in.
After spending five years on the ship, and traveling all over from the verse’, Tai Minh left the ship and moved on. He traveled to the Core-Worlds, to try to broaden his horizons and see what he had heard described as the great cities of light. It was an unusual place, and unfamiliar to him. It was very different then many of the planets that the ship had been to, being only familiar with planets of the border and rim. They were similar to Persephone, only there were more people, and things seemed to be cleaner. He found work on Gonghe as a dock worker, but only stayed for one year before leaving. He then traveled back to the border and back to the Hera. He made his way back to the Monastery, and told of all of his travels.
He remained here for another ten years to learn more about the teachings of the "Enlightened One". After learning a great deal more, the Monastery master urged him to leave once more, but this time to spread the wisdom of what he had learned with others. Tai Minh would never refuse the Monastery Master's wishes, and found his way back out to dabble in the universe.
He travelled this time between different Monasteries on the Rim, and drifting on different transport ships. He didn't make a lot of money, but he wasn't interested in making a fortune. Tai Minh was satisfied with what he learned, and what he taught to the people he met in his travels.
It wasn't till he was forty five that the idea of the politics of the universe came into play. He had never understood why the Rim planets were so different then the Core planets, but it became increasingly more evident that this was a problem that affected everything. He was told about a call for workers on Verbena and decided to answer the call. He didn't understand until after he arrived, they were calling up volunteers for an army being massed. Tai Minh had many occasions which he needed to defend himself, as many on the rim and border saw him as an easy target, though they would be in for a surprise as they would attempt to attack him. He didn't know much about what this army was being made for, but he did follow a strict adherence of self defense. He knew from the lessons at the monastery, that conflict was a natural element of the human spirit that should be balanced. And when it wasn’t terrible things happened, and it was important to keep things from being worse then they had to be. Everyone seemed to be talking about how the Core Worlds wanted to change the rest of the planets, and rule over them. Tai Minh thought that the Rim Worlds should be allowed to remain as it was if they wanted so had little issue with being drawn in. With the threat of invasion, Tai Minh knew that fighting to defend themselves was necessary.
Tai Minh wasn't as anxious to fight as many of those around him, and this was known to several people who had come with him there. Fortunately there was a call for people who had a decent amount of cooking ability was brought up, and the people that knew him signed him up as a chef. This was something Tai Minh could do, and when the war finally began, Tai Minh didn’t notice very much. All the soldiers were excited, except for him. His commanding officer was respectful of the idea that he was a monk, and he didn’t force him to wear a uniform. He was the chef at a training base on Verbena for the first year, until there was a need for them to move. They transferred to Rama, a moon of Vishnu. This was a larger base, and a hospital was there where they brought in many of the wounded. Tai Minh didn’t know where they all came from, but they were always bringing in more and more. Because of it, Tai Minh would frequently go in and give spiritual support. Afterward they got transferred back to Verbena. Closer to the end of the war, they were moved closer to the front. Tai Minh saw for the first time what this battle between the planets was doing, and had to himself fight. After the battles hundreds of men lay dead, the landscape was scorched, and it was just a horrific image of what used to be a beautiful place. Tai Minh would attempt to help the wounded on both sides as he could, bringing water, and helping bring them to safer location. He prayed for them to pass on in peace, having been ended in such carnage. In the last few months of the war they were moved back to another base on Verbena. Verbena was quickly falling to the constant Alliance attack, and over time the Independents were poised to surrender. Tai Minh was moved to a training encampment, however after being there for three days the commanding officer seeing the end being so near didn’t want to surrender. Upon the last supply ship landing, he ordered the camp disbanded. For the most part everyone understood the war was over and boarded the transport. It headed for Delynn, and the soldiers went their different ways. Tai Minh was not sure what to do, and stayed in a temple at a town called Grenleton. It was several days after they heard the news of the high command surrendering, but that the war was no quite finished. Tai Minh remained here until it was finally declared that the war was over. And when this finally occurred, Tai Minh decided it was time to return home.
Hera was a very different place when he returned. Apparently a large battle had been fought on a far away part of the planet called "Serenity Valley". He had never heard of it before, but it seemed to be a place of great importance. He returned to the Monastery and told of his adventures since he'd left last. They had been aware of the conflict, but not many had the experience that he had. The only others had been chaplains, and most were younger. Tai Minh had found it necessary to fight at times to preserve the lives around him, which made him quite different He stayed another 3 years at the Monastery. Then the old Monastery Master died. It was a period of grief yet a time to rejoice as he had moved on past the physical body and onto a new form of existence they did not understand. This caused Tai Minh to consider that perhaps the master had wanted him to venture out again to teach people of the ways of the enlightened one. He made up his mind to leave one final time, and this time without the intent of returning.
Tai Minh found a sort of tranquility in his decision to leave for a final time. Perhaps the Monastery Master had seen that in him long ago, and he just hadn't seen himself, that his destiny lay outside of the walls of the Monastery. He went back to Persephone, and found passage on several vessels, and traveled around spreading the word of the enlightened one. His skills have taken him far, as well as his wisdom, and where he will go, as far as he is concerned, is up to the winds.
RP Sample: Tai Minh walked through the streets on Persephone with his walking stick in hand. He had big smile on his face as he did and looked at all the faces and sights around him. Few people seemed to share his bliss, but that didn't bother him. He was enjoying his time and that was all that mattered. He walked into a bar which he was familiar with, as he was a frequent customer, and looked at all the people. It wasn't a very well built building, and was rather dark. Candles lit up half the room that wasn't lit by the holes in the roof.
His walking stick clumped on the ground as he walked over the wood floor which attracted the attention of some of the people already in there. The bar tender recognized him and nodded to him. Tai Minh walked over to him and stood before the bar. He placed a hand on the long wooden pannel, his smile beaming. The bar tender set down a glass in front of him, it was filled with just water. Tai Minh set down a coin on the bar.
"Thank you, sir" Tai Minh said smiling, though his heavy eastern accent clung to it.
He picked up the glass and moved back a few steps, to place in the bar where no one stood. He sipped the water and began to stretch. He didn't drink much, he had learned to control himself. He stood at the end of the room and remained there sipping the water. He did not move from his position. After finishing the small glass he stepped outside, back into the sun. It hit his face, and his smile struck back almost as bright as the shiney circle in the sky. He walked to the left a little, a ritual he went through every other day. Tai Minh stood perfectly still for a moment. Then he stretched his left palm straight forward, and his right back, then twisted both up and back down at the center of his body. He had begun his meditation, and he would remain here for a while. His smile faded slightly as he went into a deep trance that was the way towards Enlightenment.
