First Name: Gavin
Last Name: Torrik
Age: 57
Height: 6’1
Weight: 179 lbs
Appearance: Gavin is an older man. He has the absolute air of an old soldier. His hair is short and grayed brown. He still has a physically fit build, and is still fairly strong. His face isn’t quite so terribly aged, though it does show the ware of a life of experience. He has a short beard on his face, which also shows faded coloring.
Clothing wise Gavin tends to wear somewhat loose fitting items. Generally a blue colored shirt with long sleeves, atop dark pants. But as with many former supporters of the Independent movement, he wears garments with brown as well. Generally he can be found with a brown vest and leather shoulder guard. All in all he fits in very well with most Rim World locale.
Persuasion: Independent
Military Service: 2506-2511 – Independent Infantry Officer
General Skills: Gavin is an experienced navigator both in space and on the ground. He is far from professional, but he’s spent enough time doing basic calculations as a necessity throughout his life that he can figure out a general idea of what to do. He has basic mechanical and engineering skills so that he can do simple tasks. He knows how to drive a mule, he can handle essential piloting of a shuttle and ship. Most essential for living on the Rim and Border is that he is of course handy with a gun. He is merely competent with most ship born tasks, but he isn’t a master of any specific skill one would have when working on one.
Talents: Gavin has a knack for leading people. He’s got a life of experience in terms of directing people and has a firm grasp on what it will take. He generally has a good understanding of people as well, and can assess quickly what a person needs to get through something, making him that much more effective. He has a mental and physical endurance, which lets him keep an eye on a goal for long periods of time. He also has a great respect for right and wrong, and understands law and order from the Alliance perspective very well. He doesn’t necessarily like it, but he can tolerate which is better then what some do.
Flaws: Gavin can have a bad habit of seeing things a little bit too gray, and going back and forth on an issue for justification. He can change his mind rather quickly on something he’s doing simply for the purpose of being right. He also can be one to try to do the right thing to a fault. At times he could make a decision, that while morally right, will lead to others being hurt. He can take some things a bit too personally, and other things he can ignore entirely. Both frequently will happen at inopportune times which doesn’t make the best of friends always. He will also make contacts with disreputable people, which aren’t the sort you’d want to be in contact with.
Personality Traits: Gavin is a true independent sort of person. He doesn’t view the government as something he needs, or a hand out. He believes in hard work and doing what you need to achieve a dream. He does not have much, but all he has he worked for, and that’s important to him. He values people that operate in the same way.
He is a serious man, but he gets along well with others. He is not terribly complicated. He has a belief system, and he has his values. He’s not likely to change them any time soon, if ever. He is a man of honor, and one who strives to do the right thing as he sees it. But he still may find himself doing the wrong thing from time to time.
His sense of humor is present, and he doesn’t take everything so terribly harsh. But he is a man who has a line that you can cross, and won’t let you get too deep into that. He can get physical if needs to, and doesn’t shy away from a fight, even if the odds are against him. But he’s in good spirits about his age, and will use it as a joke every now and again.
History: Born on March 29, 2461, Gavin began life as a screaming baby, as everyone does. He was born on Persephone, in a smaller town called Chesterson. The town had a tiny spaceport beside it, and it was a sort of commerce hub for the area. Really the spaceport was more used for shipping things around the planet then it was as a place for interplanetary travel. His father was a clerk and his mother was on the medical staff of the port. Both lived a fairly simple life, and they weren’t quite poor.
Gavin was raised in that little town for all of his life, coming across a wide variety of people. They ranged from off world miners coming for work in a nearby aluminum mine, to well educated administrators that were overseeing different operations in the region. He didn’t talk to any of them, but he got a small understanding of the wide galaxy because of it.
He had many friends growing up, and was one with no shortage of time for outside play. He and his friends would run around town and outside of it all the time. Gavin did like the outside a great deal, and didn’t like being cooped up inside doing nothing all day.
As he grew older and got through his basic studies the town began to take a bit of a bad turn. Harder economic times made things difficult for people, and it was only made worse as bad people started to come into the town to take advantage. Knock off peddlers, and bad creditors began to appear almost daily. They gave people loans and demand collection far earlier then agreed on, with ridiculously high interest. And if one couldn’t pay, they brought in mercenaries to handle the trouble themselves.
Chesterson quickly became a town that people didn’t want to go to unless they had to, and people couldn’t leave because they were too poor. This affected Gavin’s family as well since the tax rate on their home went very high as the mayoral election went to one of those bad creditors.
Finally the towns people opted for doing something about it. They began to organize a militia to help defend the town as needed from those that were causing them all to suffer. They didn’t just outright attack those they knew to be responsible, but when the creditors sent men to “collect” too early, the town quickly rallied to defend that person.
Gavin was 17 when the first of these retaliations began, and was also a member of the militia. He was a proud member who found that it was necessary to defend your home when the wrong sort of people came to take advantage of good people. After two months of the militia actively retaliating the town began get very clean, and by the end of the year it was back to the way things were. But the militia remained to ward off those that would still seek to do them harm.
It was not very large, only about fifty men, but would drill and operate at least once a month to make sure it was effective. It began to coordinate with other militias further away, to assist them if they themselves needed help.
Gavin remained a member of the militia, and worked on the docks at the spaceport while doing so. He was young, but was very devoted to the town and protecting people that needed protecting. But he was still really just a dock worker, not a real soldier.
One day when he was in his early twenties a trading partner town on Hera said that they were having a great deal of trouble with bandits and no one would come to their aid. Since Chesterson had an operating militia they decided to help them. Gavin boarded a transport ship and the Chesterson Militia road to the aid of the town on Hera.
There was a prolonged engagement of a month, much longer then the week that was planned for. It was the definition of a border skirmish, with only about two hundred men on each side, but Gavin’s side came out victorious. He himself had performed very valiantly, and was promoted within the militias ranks.
Sometime later Gavin married his wife Sera. They had known each other when they were younger and were finally engaged and wed when they were both 24.
They began life simple, and Gavin was still working on the docks making a fairly good living. But he still was operating within the militia and was promoting to the place of lieutenant within it.
Their son, David, was born a year later, and Gavin couldn’t have been prouder. He attempted to raise him in the way he had. Plenty of exercise and play outside, and not being inside watching the cortex all day. Though it didn’t really work out that way. His son was not quite as active as Gavin himself had been. As he got older he was more of a reader.
This did not bother Gavin so much, since it would be good for the family to get someone of some real education. Gavin supported it, and did not get in the way, though he tried to raise his son as best he could.
Then tragedy came to them when Sera was struck by a vehicle when David was ten. It was purely an accident, and no one was to blame. Gavin was heartbroken, and angry. Yet he did nothing to take vengeance since there was no one at fault. After the funeral he was rather quiet and hardly knew what to do. He went back to work, and tried to keep himself busy. He needed to be strong for his son, and he was.
A decade later Gavin was in charge of the militia and things were getting hectic around the galaxy. The talk of war was everywhere, and people seemed to be getting ready for it. Gavin himself was having a bit of trouble with his son. David seemed to be very in favor of Unification, but Gavin was rather against it. And as the leader of the militia he would need to really choose a side. When the first shots were fired, Gavin made his decision to present the militia to the Independent Army.
The unit was broken up however, and split into different groups to give them men with more experience. Having the experience he did however aloud Gavin to be made an infantry officer. He hoped his son would stay at home, away from the war, but as they had a major falling out and fight right before he left he wasn’t so sure.
Gavin was shipped all over the stars, fighting battles all over the stars. He was a competent commander, and was reliable for his superiors. But he did not always win. He was prone to attempting aggressive tactics, which in the face of overwhelming odds wasn’t always the best idea.
Over time he was promoted to the rank of Captain, and was the head of a company of eighty men. But as the war wound down the morale of the men started to waver. Gavin himself knew that the odds of winning the war were terrible but he continued the fight. In 2511 he and his unit were trapped at a fortified position on Ezra. With no way to get supplies and no way out, they surrendered. Fortunately the Battle of Serenity ended a month later, and with it the war.
During the war Gavin had received the terrible news from a neighbor that prior to the wars end, his son had left to enlist with the Alliance. He felt his son had made a terribly stupid decision, but he didn’t know how to contact him. Their town had been on the receiving end of heavy bombing during the war, and Gavin’s home and the space dock were both gone.
So Gavin began to drift a little bit, doing work as a hired hand here and there. Fortunately he still owned a plot of land on Persephone that his family used to farm, but hadn’t for a generation as they didn’t have the money. But Gavin was contacted with an offer to buy it, and he sold it as he had no use for it.
With the money Gavin decided to do something he’d always wanted to do. He bought a ship so that as a free man he could sail the stars and go where he pleased. And ever since he has operated his vessel, which was fairly cheap, small, and not in the best condition and taken it wherever he could find work to do.
RP Sample: Gavin stood in the dirty, sandy pathway looking up an immense hulk of metal. It was a giant ball of what some might consider to be just scrap. The entire area was filled with such things, but this one in particular fit the description nicely.
The object was gray, roughly fifty feet tall, and was very smooth. It had a bulb at one end, and a rounded front. It had four legs which kept it docked nicely into the ground beside other objects that were quite similar.
The vessel was a relic by most standards. It hadn’t been very well taken care of when it was operating, and now it was just sitting here covered in dust. It didn’t have any exposed portions to it however, and its listing did note it as space worthy.
”And you say I could take it right now?” Gavin asked looking at the vessel, a childish glint in his eye as a fantasy he’d had for years suddenly unfolded before him.
“If you so chose. I got the paper work at the office.” A man who was standing beside him said.
With a grin, Gavin just stared at the SandFly and said the words. ”I’ll take it.
