Talents, Flaws, Attributes, Skills, Assets, Complications, etc.
First and foremost: the site may be based off of the Serenity table top game, however, their character sheet doesn't cut it here. The things on that sheet are a great base to jump off of, but where things here are concerned, that's all it is: a base. The stats in the RPG are great for that sort of RPing, however, for this type, where 90% of what you're writing, the other characters in game know nothing about, it's really not going to help you a whole lot. Dice indications mean nothing here. We do roll the dice in certain situations, but it's not something we do for everything we do. During especially sticky situations, definitely, but not for every post, unless you happen to get a really awful roll on your last one. You may need to roll a few times to properly recover.
But, I digress. I want you to tell me who you are. I do not want a list of things you are capable of, though I should like to know the things you can do, as well as the things you have done. These are the things that made you. You are not an item of inventory. Keep in mind when creating your sheet that this is story based RPing, and I want to know your story.
Don't tell me that your character has a skill level D12 when handling firearms. I want you to tell me that your character trained in an alliance military academy (and I want the name of the academy, as well as which planet it was on) for a year before going into the field. (Insert name here) was 6considered a sharp shooter due to the finesse with which he/she handled their weapons. When did you first shoot a gun? How old were you when you graduated the academy? Tell me a couple things about your childhood.
Describe your character as though it is someone you personally know, because you should feel as though you do. Tell me things about them that you would tell me if I asked you to describe your husband, wife, brother, sister, mother, father, or friend. You could also try writing the sheet while in character. Ask the questions on the sheet to yourself and answer them as your character would answer.
Look over the template we ask that you use, then look over the character sheets posted in the approved section and see what those who came before you posted. They were approved, so obviously they did something right, right?
It doesn't have to be overly in depth. Yes, I want your character to have depth in a manner of speaking, but I don't mean that you should write a gorram novel.
Above all else though, HAVE FUN! This is something you do not get paid to do. It's something you do because you love to do it. If you get too serious about it, you will lose that love, and when you lose that love, you will lose a small piece of yourself that you may never get back. Relax, enjoy the ride, and don't get killed.
