History: Ray was born on Beumonde on August 21st, 2483. He was born into a middle class. His father was in a printing firm management, and his mother was a 'Moderate's Merchants' Representative. From a very young age Ray was very aggressive. He was very competitive, especially with his older brother. He did not do so well when he was in school starting out, and this trend carried on to when he was in upper level schooling. He was constantly getting in arguements with teachers because he presumed he was correct and the teacher was wrong when they would attempt to describe his errors. This would add on to his aggressive nature later on. He grew up with his friends, Keegan Hoffman, and Bishop Morse. They seemed to be the only people that could stand his very verbally offensive nature.
Having no ambition, and little success, in getting higher levels of education Ray had few options at age 19. This is where the name "Raymond Almost" started playing a heavy role in the sense that he almost achieved acceptance into colleges. Around this time however, a new opportunity presented itself. The Unification War had recently begun. Ray had little interest however in planetary politics, and wasn't interested in the war. He was a very internally minded person. His two friends Bishop and Hoffman on the other hand had quite an interest in joining the independent faction. They were more open minded then Ray was and they were also rather convincing. When the call to arms was made on Beuomonde Bishop and Hoffman were quick to answer the call for Naval hands, and easily persuaded Ray to do the same.
They were all placed on a Remora 1B, Ray was recognized as a Browncoat Merchant Marine. This meant he was stationed on the ship as a defense men to repel borders. He manned the mounted defenses as well as exercised his combat abilities which were lacking. The main reason why he was stationed on this vessel was that he displayed cowerdous tendencies in the face of battle, even in training. Therefore he would be much more effecient if he had no where to run. He was never informed of this, but it was understood by the ships commander who was coincidentally his friend Bishop Morse.
The Ship saw little action for the early stages of the war, several minor skirmished here and there, but not much to complain about. They were then transferred to the 'Adomant 83' Browncoat fleet. The fleet was moved over to Boros in anticipation of a large Alliance retaliation occupation force. They were stationed there for about a week, and they met Andy Andrews. This seemingly easy period was soon to end as the large alliance force arrived very soon after. The orbital battle over Boros was horrifying. Laser blasts, rockets, shards metal everywhere as the ships dodged each other. Ray was scared out of his mind. He did all he could in the defend the vessel from other alliance ships, though the vessel wasn't exactly what he was defending in his mind. More so he was just holding down the trigger on the ships mounted cannons as he had no where to run.
They survived the battle, though not without casualties. Their boarding troop squad was completely wiped out, and the pilot suffered major burns from a panel which was damaged during the battles aftermath. Ray, Hoffman, and Bishop were transferred then to a new vessel, with a new assignment. The vessel was a large red 'Mantis T5' named the Logan. They now were apart of the 'High Value Transfers' Division. It really was just a giant alliance weapons smuggling operation. Ray wasn't really involved in it very much, he had a very similar role to that which he did on their first ship. Bishop handled most of the operation business, and that was all that was all that really mattered to Ray.
From here on the war was actually a pretty cushy gig for Ray. He spent, litterally, most of his time watching the cortex and finding ways to beat boredom. This went well for several years up until mid 2510 when the Browncoats were in desperate need of Naval support, as the alliance was dominating them. They were now used as a troop transport, whether it be close encounter battle transport, or moving large amounts of troops from one planet to another. This part of the war, Ray hated the most. By this time they all knew they were losing, as was evident by the troops they were picking up.
The battle of Serenity was the part Ray hated the most. They were always in danger. Between getting shot at by troops on the ground, and skiffs in the air, being alive was becoming a major hazard by the day. Eventually however at the announcement of surrender Ray was overjoyed. When the Logan finally surrendered Ray was taken off to a prisoner of war camp. He wasn't happy with his conditions, but he was he wasn't getting shot at all the time. He was here with Hoffman for several months, and was released at the declaration of all threats neutralized. They were carted back to their home planet Beumonde, and tried to make do with nothing as they had nothing left at the end of the war. The fate of Bishop however was unknown to Ray and Hoffman alike for several weeks. He resurfaced though at the end of the third week with an opportunity for the two of them on Beylix and to get there as soon as possible. Ray and Hoffman got there several days later at the location Bishop described which was 'Impound Lot 96A'. Somehow Bishop had managed to reposes their old vessel, and had hired the pilot Andy Andrews, as well as two new faces for the vessel. Their names were Scruggs, a scraggly looking thin man, and some aggressive Scottish man that always spoke with a hint of his 'mutt-tongue' He suggested that they start their own smuggling operation just like the one during the war. He easily convinced Ray and Hoffman that this was a very lucrative operation and they started out.
They've been working this same deal for 6 years and its never gotten old. It is recognized that they are some of the best smugglers on the rim, and Ray takes pride in being apart that. He doesn't consider the reasons why they are, as much as he enjoys just being the best.
RP Sample: It was a hot day on the surface of Persephone, not that Ray would have taken notice other then the fact that Hoffman had turned up the heat on the vessel because he felt more comfortable in warmer environment. Ray hadn't stopped complaining to Andy since he awoke as a result of it. Ray had a very low opinion of Andy, and always had given the pilots personal history. He had walked onto the bridge and sat there. Andy's stupid cartoon show was going and Ray nearly broke the switch turning it off. He switched to a more cultural performance, a dark comedic parody of farmers on the rim. He had a very dark sense of humor, and he felt a connection with watching the people be humiliated.
Much to his dismay Andy returned several minutes later. Ray didn't stop watching, and pretended not to notice that he had walked in. Andy however switched off the monitor. Before Ray had time to speak, Andy was spewing words from his face hole. He said something about starting pre flight checks and passengers being aboard, but Ray lost interest within moments. He had much more interest in things that didn't involve people who weren't him. He stood up and walked out off of the bridge and started making his way to the lounge. He looked out of the door to the cargo bay only long enough to see Bishop there with many others and men loading boxes. Not wanting to help them, he found the couch in the lounge to be far more inviting, and plopped himself down and activated the cortex terminal and continued watching the program he had been on the bridge.
