May 25, 9:56 A.M, A.S.T
- Orbit of Whittier, Kalidasa System -
The airlock doors wheezed and then slid open. The dense pressure and oxygen was visibly being sucked into the vents for a moment. The airtight void had been filled just moments ago when the two transport vessels linked. The airlock doors to the smaller vessel had opened first to reveal a single man standing there alone. He had a dark colored coat, and longer blonde hair. He stood alone and waited for the opposing door to open. After the outer doors opened, the inner doors did the same. When the larger vessels inner doors opened, there were two men on the other side. One was shorter and smaller then the other. The larger man had a scrappier look to him, as he wore thick clothing, and had visible scars on his face. The smaller man had dark skin, wore a nicer sort of frock coat, and had a smile on his face, his thin eyes never shifting from forward. The blonde man opposing them began walking towards them. His boots connected with the metal floor, and sounded heavy as he came towards them. He came right up in front of them. He was taller then the short man by about an inch, but shorter then the larger one by several. The shorter man looked up at the man before him.
”Welcome aboard ”Min Bu” Captain Morse.” The man said extending his hand to shake.
The blonde man grabbed his hand firmly. ”Please, Captain Gi, this is your ship. Morse will do.” He said politely and formally. There was no reason for him to be called captain on board a ship that wasn’t his. He was no longer in the military, though maritime law did suggest he should still go by his title.
The shorter man, Captain Gi chuckled a bit. ”Very well Mr. Morse. But before I can allow you through my ship, I’ll need for you to hand over your weapons.” He said. It was a serious precaution. A planet like Whittier was known to attract some of those that traveled outside of the law. And though Captain Gi wore a smile of with a twinge of concern, the large man beside him did anything but show signs of amusement.
”Of course” Morse said relieving himself of the two LeMat pistols kept in his jacket. Then reaching behind him and revealing a Mateba which he kept holstered on the back of his belt. ”No need to be carrying them here anyway, but you know the verse’ is.” Morse explained. Though there was a concern in his own mind for his own security, there was the concept of mutually assured destruction. Should something happen to him, the Logan could theoretically do quite a lot of damage to the Min Bu, and vice versa. Both captains were very much aware of this fact, so there was no need to go too far with it.
”I’ll see them returned to you when you leave.” Captain Gi said to Morse. He then nodded towards the large man who walked away from them with the three pistols in hand. ”So you have an interest in our particular enterprise do you?” He asked, turning and beginning to walk, going in the same direction that the large man had gone. It was Trawler Class Transport So it was built on several levels, and they were on the top, so they would have to go down a ways.
Morse nodded as they walked. ”Well I’ve had an interest in acquiring one of those oddities, which are brought to bare by men such as yourself. And when I saw your venture schedule on the cortex, I thought I’d come take a look for myself.” Morse said following Captain Gi as he walked him through his ship.
They turned right and came to a stairwell, and Captain Gi walked first down it. ”I see,” Captain Gi said, still smiling. ”We see people who take special interest such as yours. Though our aims are primarily geared towards more anchored people, we would never turn away people who have a more mobile status if they’re interested.” Captain Gi elaborated as they moved down the stairs. They moved from deck 1 to deck 2, passing by the mess hall as they did. But the stairs didn’t end there. They continued on down, deeper into the ship.
”Well, thank you for seeing more the short notice in any case. Having the more mobile status that I do, it does make having appointments a bit difficult.” Morse said, stepping down the stairs somewhat slower then Captain Gi. He didn’t take much note of the ship around him, he didn’t care about it, since he wasn’t going to be here long.
”Nonsense.” Captain Gi said. ”We had an engagement here on Whittier already, it’s all the better for us if we don’t have to go any farther to transact further business.” The man said just as they were reaching the bottom of deck 3.
”How’d that engagement go, if you don’t mind me asking?” Morse asked as they came close to the bottom of the staircase. Though Morse was actually not concerned in the slightest about such a thing, but it was good to get an understanding of everything something that might be necessary.
As they reached the bottom of the stairwell Captain Gi answered. ”Fairly well. Land Barons tend to take the most interest in these sorts of things, and the one we met with earlier today was more then forth coming, though I do wish he’d have taken more off my hands then he did.” He said stepping forward. ”Well here we are. So Mr. Morse, what is it that you’re looking for?” He asked. They were now standing in the main deck of the ship, and the cargo hold. Morse hadn’t been on a Trawler before, but he knew that the ship was really just a big cargo hold. But this one was obviously modified, as the cargo holds hallways were much thinner. There was an odd smell to the hold itself, much like a ranch on the rim in a lot of ways. In addition there was quite a bit of ruckus coming from around them.
”Something on the smaller side.” Morse said, following Captain Gi as they began walking forward down the center hallway. A growling sound came from his right, and looked over seeing a wild cat with orange black stripes on it.
”What sort of climate are you looking for, tropical? Or something colder?” Captain Gi asked walking him down by some of the more prized aspects of his collection. The big cats were always a mainstay, and were quite a price, as were all of the larger ones. He was somewhat disappointed, yet not surprised that he wanted something smaller.
”Temperate would be best. I’m looking for a rather low maintenance animal.” Morse mentioned as they continued on. They passed by a series of cages, which were absolutely filled with birds of various colors. They all cawed in and chirped. He didn’t know what they were but there were quite a number of them.
Captain Gi stopped. ”How are you in terms of the aggressive nature of the animal? Are you looking for something for protective purposes?” Captain Gi asked.
Morse laughed a bit at the concept. ”Haha, hell no. Your man up front got all I need for protection.” Morse said.
Captain Gi smiled and nodded. ”I understand.” He said looking over the cages beside him. ”Perhaps a bird is what your looking for? A status symbol of the rarest sort, easily maintained?” The man said looking over the birds in the cages, presenting them to Morse.
”I’m not quite looking for a status symbol, as much as an actual animal itself. Birds are rather…” Morse started, but when Captain Gi began nodding, he understood that Gi got his meaning.
Still nodding Gi continued ”Yes I know what you mean.” He said leveling his head. ”Birds are more for private flaunting then anything else. And to be honest they give a dreadful smell.” He said, and then started walking towards the left. There were quite a number more animals here. ”I’d suggest one of these, squirrel monkeys, but they pee on everything they sit on.” He said then taking a right moving towards the other end of the cargo bay. ”Here I have an assortment of animals I picked up from a compound from on Greenleaf, which may be more towards your taste.” He said bringing Morse towards the very end of it. They were now surrounded by cages with small animals. Some were asleep, others were staring right at them. ”Perhaps this, a Kinkajou, the honey bear.” He said pointing at a yellow rodent looking thing.
Morse looked at it. The creature was eating something on an artificial branch. It chewed on this bit of food, and got it’s mouth wide. It clamped down hard with a set of very sharp teeth. ”Teeth like that could rip up whatever they get near, especially skin.” Morse observed, which really put him off of it.
”Hmm, true. They do have their moments, which make them rather difficult to deal with.” He moved and looked at another cage. ”Perhaps…" He paused when he noticed Morse was looking in at a cage with particular interest. ”Ah yes, Brown-throated Sloth.” Captain Gi said, looking at the creature as well.
The creature inside was hanging from a rope. It moved it’s head and looked around. It moved one of it’s long and thin arms by its face, and grasped the rope again. Morse was rather captivated with this animal.
”What’s it doing?” Morse asked as the thing brushes its face with its arm very slowly.
”It’s doing what they do. It’s hanging and loafing. Sloths are given that name for a reason.” Captain Gi announced, then he continued. ”They’re quite interesting, they eat a diet of protein mostly. They only defecate once a week, maintenance rather low. However they need a place to climb, it’s the only real way they can move about.”
Morse had the thought about all the rope rigging which was all over the ship due to Hoffmans need to get around and realized the simplicity of it. He looked at the animal there, as it hung alone, rubbing it’s face. ”How much are you willing to depart with it for.” Morse asked still looking at it.
Captain Gi leaned back a moment and thought about it. ”Given the nature of the animal, it’s immunizations having been had, and it’s relatively young age. 100 credits, assuming you wish to buy a decent amount of food supplements for it.” He said.
Morse had his deep grin form on his face. ”I’ll take it.”
