The applause that had filled the room had ceased. The room no longer sounded with cheers, though it was no less occupied then it had been. The stage at the front of the room was empty, but the room, once filled with chairs, now held people who conversing. Many held a plate in their hands, filled with small food items, while others held a glass. They were all dressed very fine, and all looking their absolute best. It was a rather happy occasion, and everyone was making chatter and discussing what to do with their futures. Off near the side of the large room filled with people was a man roughly that age of 70, talking to a far younger man. Though they were different in shape and age, they both looked and sounded fairly similar. The older mans hair was gray and thin, where the younger had blonde hair.
“But Jacky couldn’t be here for this?” The older man asked the younger man. He wore a fine clothing similar to that of everyone else. He held something in his hand, a small blue square. On the outside it held a phrase in Chinese.
”No, she would never let her be part of this. Aint anything to be done about it now anyway.” The blonde man responded. His face held an expression of accepted submission. He knew well what the situations were around, and he didn’t think on them often. He just dealt with how things were, because there wasn’t anything that he could really do that would change it. Suddenly from behind him came a voice. “Hey Morse, come on out here!” Yelled a man off behind them. Both the younger and older man turned, but only one actually knew who the person who’d called their shared name was. The younger man turned around towards the older man. ”Alright dad, I gotta go.” He said.
“Yeah, don’t let me hold you up. I’ll have mom hold onto this.” He said. The younger man began stepping back. ”Alright, see you at home.” Morse said, backing up and moving in to the crowd. He walked on over to the man who’d called his name. They were roughly the same age, but this man was a bit shorter then Morse was. His brown hair was well combed and he held to glasses in his hand. ”Jimmy! Looks like we made.” He said taking on of the glasses out of the man’s hand. They both started to walk out towards a balcony where there were a lot of people.
The sun was long gone, and outside there was a large cement sculpture reaching up far above them. It started as a smooth column and split into four small branches at the top. Lights shown upon it, and many people came out to enjoy the scenery of it. ”So what’s the plan Jimmy?” Morse asked taking a small drink off the glass in his hand while looking out. Jimmy did roughly the same. ”I don’t know yet, I think I might travel a bit.” Jimmy responded. ”Travel? Where the hell do you wanna travel too?” Morse asked with a snide sense. Morse never liked most of the places one might go, feeling that Beaumonde was the best there was. ”Pff, anywhere except the central planets I think.”
They both started laughing at that. Their political views had been very similar throughout the entire time they’d known each other. Even as other people were less concerned, or in opposition to what they thought, they both held to their own beliefs. ”It’s getting worse out there you know.” Morse stated. ”Them and their Parliament” He said in a mocking tone towards the notion. Jimmy turned a bit towards Morse. ”Their calling up the militias out on the rim. Verbena and Aberdeen are hauling in everything they’ve got.” Jimmy added. They both knew what the ramifications of that were, but they continued. ”And with Centrals industrial capacity, they’ll swamp over them without any trouble, unless they get help from some other worlds.” Morse said in obvious reference their own world. ”Course I’ve heard enough from our councils that we might start doing the same thing on our end.” He stopped taking another drink.
Jimmy moved out and leaned against the balcony. ”Shits looking bad. My guess is that it’ll go to open conflict sooner or later.” Jimmy said with serious yet sarcastic tone to him. Jimmy was a very light hearted person, and had never been someone Morse knew to be overly serious about most things outside of hating stupidity. ”What’s your plan in either case.” Jimmy asked, since Morse had already asked him.
”In what sense?” Morse asked ”What do I plan to do if there’s conflict or not?” Morse wasn’t sure exactly what Jimmy was referring to, namely because he hadn’t really contemplated it in either. ”Well if it doesn’t go to blows what are you gonna do?” Jimmy explained. Morse didn’t really think on it at all, he got his answer out rather fast. ”Oh, I’m gonna teach man, you know that. We aint all keen towards the research road.” Morse answered. Jimmy finished another sip off the glass and continued. ”And if it does go to a conflict. Would you join up to fight?” He asked. Morse also didn’t have to think on that long either. ”If the Central Planets start marchin’ towards the rim, I’ll be first in line to sign my name for commission.” Morse answered, thinking then suddenly on the idea of leading people in a battle to defend their home.
